PETER II
Menshikov Palace
1715-1730
YEARS OF GOVERNMENT: 1727-1730
Peter was the youngest emperor of the Russian Empire from 1727 to 1730, ascended the throne after Catherine II at the age of 11. He is the grandson of Peter I.

After the death in 1719 of Peter I's son from his second marriage, Tsarevich Peter Petrovich, the infant emperor began to be regarded as the only legitimate heir to the imperial crown.

The education of Tsarevich Peter was not given much attention. Two of his teachers are known — Semyon Mavrin and Ivan Zeikin, who taught the tsarevich history, geography, mathematics and Latin.

Peter II was not able to rule independently, as a result of which almost unlimited power was first in the hands of Menshikov, and then - Osterman and Dolgorukov. The result of the reign of Peter II was the strengthening of the influence of the Supreme Privy Council.

The place of construction of the palace of Peter II was not chosen by chance, the daughter of A. D. Menshikov was engaged to the future emperor, so the palace was laid on a plot belonging to the prince. Previously, there was a house of Menshikov's butler, this building formed the basis of the eastern wing of the palace. It is noteworthy that Peter II died without waiting for the completion of construction, and he himself never lived in this palace.
Currently, the former palace of Peter II houses the Oriental and Philological faculties of St. Petersburg State University.
